Transportation of Fragile Goods

The Environment Monitor design was used as a basis for the Transport Quality Monitor. It measures, records, and alarms on the environment temperature and the three axes of mechanical shocks. In the transport of fragile goods the monitored data is used to find when and where transported merchandise suffered unacceptable mechanical damage. Levels of acceptability for temperature and shock are individually programmable.

One monitor is included in each package of fragile merchandize. It is individually programmed with the threshold levels that would trigger an alarm. When the merchandize is delivered, the alarms status (one LED) is checked and if red, the unit has been subjected to unacceptable conditions of temperature and or shock. Then monitored data is transferred to a PC and analyzed.

The unit has RS232 and I2C interfaces allowing economical communication capabilities. With wireless modems units could be remotely interrogated from a PC.

Having a unique serial number the monitor could be used to track the merchandise.

MEMS accelerometers are becoming the transducers of choice for vibration measurements in many industrial applications. However, the traditional view suggests that these are not “instrumentation grade” devices. How would it work in your application?
